FARRMS Highlight: Adam and Apryl Mawby with Gardendwellers Farm & Ranch
Article by Kacie Kostelecky
“Every morning I have a sunrise over the mountains, and every evening I have sunset over the plains.”
Adam Mawby, one of two passionate farmers behind Gardendwellers Farm & Ranch in rural North Dakota, explained what it’s like living off the land. Adam and Apryl’s story is one of perseverance, adaptation, and a deep commitment to sustainable agriculture.
Adam's journey into farming began unexpectedly. Growing up in small cities, his parents decided to start a culinary herb farm when he was just 12. This venture laid the foundation for what would later become Gardendwellers Ranch and eventually Gardendwellers Farm & Ranch.
Adam's interest in farming intensified after college, realizing he missed having a connection with nature, he left his office job and began work as a hired hand for a farmer/rancher, providing invaluable hands-on experience.
In the early years, Adam and Apryl faced challenges acquiring land, equipment, and capital, and making strategic decisions. Adam’s flexible business plan evolved to meet changing needs. Acquiring land through the FSA posed challenges, but with determination and family support, they overcame hurdles and settled on their current land. The Foundation for Agricultural and Rural Resources Management Sustainability, or FARRMS, was a major support system for Adam and helped get him through the hard times.
“I have been involved with them since 2014 when they were helping provide internships at farms and connecting new farmers with old,” Adam continued, “They have been a financial backer for me at times, issuing low-interest loans, grants for smaller things as well as a great networking system and informational hub for small scale agriculture.”
A significant milestone in their journey was the 2019 grant project, where Adam engaged directly with the community, receiving valuable feedback through postcards. This not only provided direction but also highlighted the importance of embracing constructive criticism for continuous improvement.
Now, as a successful farmer, Adam emphasizes the importance of the local foods movement in shaping his approach. While he doesn't blindly follow trends, he is committed to raising animals that are beneficial for the soil and producing healthy food.
Adam's advice to potential farmers is clear – it must be a passion from the heart. Dedication, resilience, and genuine enthusiasm are crucial for overcoming the inevitable challenges that come with farming.
Gardendwellers Farm & Ranch is not just a farm; it's a testament to the dreams cultivated in the vast landscapes of North Dakota. As Adam and Apryl continue to plant their roots, they inspire others to embark on their agricultural journeys with passion and purpose
Gardendwellers Farm & Ranch currently supplies Chickens, lamb, and freeze-dried herbs locally direct-to-consumer only.
