The primary goal for this initiative is to assist communities in the oil-impacted areas of western North Dakota to address infrastructure management challenges in small communities that do not have the financial resources or personnel capacity to conduct their own assessments.
As communities expand, water supply is not always adequately considered or addressed. Some communities cannot serve the current population on peak days. Further, most cities do not have the adequate capacity to meet fire flow recommendations in accordance with ND Department of Health adopted standards.
Of the assessments completed to date, the most common wastewater issues are lagoon capacity and present wastewater treatment structures not meeting ND Department of Health standards. Additional issues are the lack of adequate lagoon liners to prevent seepage, inability to service lagoons, capacity limitations of main sewer lines, lack of lift stations, and accelerated deterioration of streets.
